Repair and manufacture hand tools used in farriery


Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to maintain, repair and make a variety of tools used in standard farriery workplaces. Tools are made by hand by the farrier when commercially unavailable or when commercially available tools are deemed to be unsuitable for the specific purpose identified.

The unit applies to individuals who use hand tools to perform farriery services across different equine industry sectors.

1. Identify tools requiring repair, replacement or manufacture

1.1 Identify unsafe, faulty or unsuitable hand tools and mark them for repair, replacement or manufacture

1.2 Determine specifications for those hand tools to be maintained, repaired or made

1.3 Confirm work instructions or seek advice from appropriate personnel

2. Maintain, repair or make hand tools used in farriery

2.1 Follow workplace health and safety requirements, and select, use, maintain and store personal protective equipment, according to the type of work activity undertaken

2.2 Make or repair hand tools according to workplace practices and safety procedures

2.3 Temper or harden tools that are newly made or repaired

2.4 Use appropriate quenching agents according to workplace requirements

2.5 Check finished tool against specifications and quality requirements
